Digital Archives, Water and Re-signifying Virtual Space

An essay on the linguistic, metaphorical, and material connections between digital space and water cycles: from the shared etymology of arkhé (water) and archive, to submarine cables, data clouds, and coltan mining. Proposes a resignification of digital culture based on its material dependence on the planet and the economic inequalities that sustain it. Paper presented at the I International Seminar on Research in Art and Visual Culture (Montevideo, 2017).
