Subtle Infrastructures

Written following walks along the Manzanares River in Madrid with artist Marina Monsonís and landscape architect Malú Cayetano, this essay proposes that imaginative contemplation of water invites us to weave “subtle infrastructures” — situated forms of knowledge that move beyond the extractive logic of water as a resource. Thinking through water sovereignty amid extreme droughts, flooding, and ongoing privatization, the text asks how we might understand water as a living archive, a distributed ecosystem of humidity, and an agent of communication across all forms of life.
